A tossing game is a game where the object is under-handed. (ie. All of the games on this website)
A throwing game is a game where the object is over-handed (ie. American football, baseball, softball)
Now, some would say that disc golf isn't tossing, by in between tossing and throwing to give it flight. Since this game falls into mid-region of tossing and throwing, we defaulted it to become a "tossing game" since it has such a large following. Not to mention that many disc golfers use an underhanded toss to flight their disc.
I had a Brit email me stating that Aunt Sally isn't considered a tossing game over the pond (UK), since tossing means a whole another thing over there (you can get the picture ... ick). So, I suppose tossing will remain a USA term when it comes to distinguishing between game types.
