What is best to color the washer(s) with?

These are a few of tips that I had found online:

1) Plastidip used to coat tool handles. I think Rustoleum makes a similar product that doesn't go on as thick. Comes in red, yellow and black and can be found at some hardware stores (ie. Home Depot or Lowes). 

2) Electrical tape and red tape and wrap it only once in one spot. Lasts a long time and easy to replace if necessary.

3) Paint the edges of the hole with auto touch up paint. Since these surfaces don't really touch anything when thrown, the paint should stay on for a long time.

Have you tried the plastidip stuff yourself?
Looks interesting and I'm thinking of trying it.
Can you do one side at a time or do you have to do the full application at once so it all sets together?

I haven't done the plasti dip on washers, but have on tools. It's good stuff and should work nicely on washers, but may give some bounce in the box if the rubber coat is too thick. I do think though that you need to dip the entire washer and not just one side for it to not peel off. I would use very fine fishing line to dip and then hang it from until dry. Let me know if you try it out. I'd love to hear how it worked and to see some pictures too if able.

Has anyone tried this plasti dip yet? If so how do you dip the washers? Do you use string or simply dip one half, let dry and then dip the other?

I haven't yet, but I think you can experiment with the following 2 methods:

1) Dip the top flat surface, let dry, then dip the other sides flat surface.

2) Tie a 1 lb. test (or less poundage .... clear monofilament thread) to the washer and dip it all in at once. Hang to dry and once dry, cut the line flush.

Tell us what you find out.

I decided to try the spray version. I will report back after I had a chance to play with the freshly painted washers.
