Well, I just finished playing my "first" few games of Cornhole in our basement with my 13 year old son. I never gave it a thought because I thought that the ceiling would have been a major issue, but while just playing around by tossing the bags at 15 feet from the board, I decided to let my son stand at that point and me try to challenge him back at 27 feet (regulation). Any other day outside with the both of us tossing at 27 feet would have been no challenge, since I would have always beat him. However, by him standing at 15 feet (handicap) and me at 27 feet, I quickly realized this made the playing field ~99% even between us based on each of our playing skills. We have 8' basement ceilings, and sure, I hit the ceiling a couple of times during each of our 7 games, but ~95% of the time I didn't. We played 7 games, where he won 3 and I won 3 and the finaly game came down to me winning 21 to 19. So, if you want to have fun with your buddies (or family members) in your basement, then do it! It's really a lot of fun. If you have 9' basement ceilings, then you should never hit the ceiling. This will be the case when we have our next house built (when the market shapes up). ;D
