Polyurethane: Oil based, fast drying, thick application, will give a light colored backround board (i.e. white) a yellowing color, hard surface when dried. 3-6 coats recommended. Therefore, this isn't recommended for use on boards with a white background. You can spray or apply via a foam brush. If applying via a foam brush, it goes on thick (less coats needed). This is great for boards that are dark or stained. Semi-gloss or gloss recommended. My preference for stained sets.
Polycrylic: Water based, fast drying, thin application, clear, goes on smoother and has a very hard surface when dried. Great for any color boards without any yellowing. 6-9 coats recommended. Semi-gloss or gloss recommended. My preference for white sets.
Finally, keep the bubbles down, don't shake your cans! If you do get bubbles or a non-smooth surface, allow the application to dry thoroughly, sand with a 320 grit and reapply. I recommend a final application applied after a 400 grit sanding via a foam brush or via a can spray of the same content.
