There's a lot of talk about what is the difference between a schedule 20, schedule 40 and schedule 80 PVC pipe. It all has to do with the thickness of the PVC wall. The higher the #, the thicker the wall diameter. Schedule 20 would be too thin and schedule 80 too thick. Generally, the hillbilly golf game is made with 1/2" schedule 40 PVC pipe, however, some say that an all around 1/2" game is too flimsy for them, so they bumped it up to the 3/4" schedule 40 PVC pipe. One person that I've heard of even went real big by using a 1 1/4" schedule 40 PVC pipe.
So, the range of schedule PVC pipes being used are:
1/2", 3/4", 1" and 1 1/4". To each their own, but 3/4" schedule 40 seems to be a common middle ground. Many follks use a combination of 1/2" and 3/4" pipe as seen here in these plans. (3/4" on the left, 1/2" on the right):
NOTE: The higher the schedule and the higher the diameter, the more you'll pay.
